The Making Of

May 6, 2001 - What a day!
The crew arrives in San Jose, California, in high spirits.

What a day, what a day, WHAT A DAY! Words could hardly explain what a marvelous day it was. Every planned event ran accordingly, and we even had time for sightseeing. It was FANTASTIC!

The day started off at 7:15am. The crew met at the Midwest Express Airline's terminal at Mitchell International Airport. After checking in our luggage, and saying our farewells, we boarded the plane. The plane ride was excellent! It was great of Midwest Express to set us up so nicely. For breakfast they served us an egg omelet, browned potatoes, ham and fruit. The flight attendants were very courteous and respectful. The plane ride took about four hours. We arrived in San Francisco at 10:50am, Pacific Time. After collecting our luggage from the baggage claim, we proceeded to our destination. As we walked out of the terminal, our eyes widened. There, parked in front of us, was a white stretch limousine! It was so beautiful! The limo* drove us to the Hyatt in San Jose.

After about an hour of relaxation in the hotel, we regrouped for lunch. We journeyed to a nearby restaurant called Coco's.

Then we hopped on to the light rail and ventured off to First Street.

There were many different activities going on, like a Cinco de Mayo celebration, and drumming in the park. San Jose was so festive! For dinner we dined at an Italian restaurant, called Bella Mia, and met with a person from our partner school, San Jose High Academy. There were candles on the table, soft music and lots of pleasant conversation. It was lovely. Today was a very nice day.

Bruce, Edward, Leah, and Sherita look forward to tomorrow.

* Note: students from most school systems, including Milwaukee Public Schools, may not be transported via rental car or other personal transportation. For liability reasons, a private, bonded carrier was used to shuttle the MPS students and staff to our various and widely spread videotaping locations. The limo service described above was the least expensive and most accommodating service our travel coordinators found. - Mittsy Voiles, Project Coordinator, Wisconsin DNR.
