Smog

Ever seen a brown haze hanging over a city during the summer? That's smog. It got its name more than a hundred years ago when someone decided to combine the words "smoke" and "fog." It's a dangerous brew that more than half of all Americans breathe in on a regular basis.

It is formed when ground-level ozone, which is the main component of smog, combines with other chemicals and particles in the air. It then reacts in the presence of strong sunlight to create that nasty stuff that makes it difficult for some people to breathe and greatly reduces visibility.
