Get Local: Issues in your community Submission Guidelines

If you are under age 13, click here.

All material should be submitted electronically according to the following guidelines. If you are unable to submit your work electronically, see the "Snail Mail" instructions below.

Basics

  1. Subject: Air quality and transportation in YOUR community (cars, bikes, buses, electric vehicles, trains, planes, etc.)

    • Do you think your community has an air pollution problem? If yes, then what do you think caused the problem? How do you think your community should solve it?

    • Is your community a "non-attainment" area, designated by EPA (if you live in the U.S.) or the air quality agency in your country? What does this mean? What is your community doing to change this status?

    • Asthma rates in your community: are they increasing? Decreasing? What does this mean?

    • How do people get around in your community? (car, bike, bus, etc.)

    • Do you see many alternative-fueled vehicles in your community? (hybrid cars - cars that run on both gasoline and a built-in electric motor; cars running on reformulated gas; cars running on ethanol; electric cars, etc.)

    • How many people carpool in your community?

    • Public transportation - does it exist in your community? Is it working? Why/why not?

    • Anything else that's directly related to air pollution and transportation issues in your community.

  2. All submissions should be your original work.

  3. Length: no more than about 1000 words (about 4 typed, double-spaced pages). A good average is 400-600 words, but shorter submissions are welcome.

  4. Writing styles: all submissions should be nonfiction. Essays, 'open letters', interviews, research reports, and articles are all welcome.

  5. Photographs that are relevant to the topic are also welcome.

  6. Submissions containing profanity will be rejected.
